Direct and Reported Speech

Direct Speech คือ การหยิบยกเอาคำพูดของบุคคลนั้นขึ้นมากล่าวโดยตรง สังเกตได้ง่ายตรงที่มีเครื่องหมายคำพูด (Quotation mark) ตัวอย่างPeter said, “I will see John tomorrow.”He said, “Will you listen to such a man?”

Reported Speech คือ การนำเอาคำพูดของบุคคลนั้นมาถ่ายทอดโดยทางอ้อม สังเกตได้ตรงที่ไม่มีเครื่องหมายคำพูด และความเปลี่ยนแปลงตรงรูปโครงสร้างของประโยค ตัวอย่าง

Peter said he would see John the next day.He asked them whether they would listen to such a man.

ลักษณะประโยค Direct Speech

หลักการเปลี่ยนแปลงโครงสร้างภายใน

ในการเปลี่ยนแปลง Direct Speech เป็น Reported Speech มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงที่สำคัญอยู่ 4 อย่างคือ

1.      เปลี่ยนแปลงกริยานำ(introducing verb)

2.      เปลี่ยนแปลงสรรพนาม(pronoun)

3.      เปลี่ยนแปลง Pointer words (ในที่นี้คือ คำที่แสดงเวลา และสถานที่)

4.      เปลี่ยนแปลง Tense

ในการเปลี่ยนแปลงกริยานำนั้น ในประโยคบอกเล่ามักจะเปลี่ยนจาก Say to เป็น tell

ในประโยคคำถามเปลี่ยนจาก Say เป็น ask ตามด้วยกรรม

ในประโยคคำสั่งเปลี่ยนจาก Say เป็น tell; command; order

ในประโยคขอร้องเปลี่ยนจาก Ask เป็น beg; request เป็นต้น

ในการเปลี่ยนแปลงสรรพนามจะต้องพิจารณาเป็นกรณีๆไป ว่าสรรพนามนั้นหมายถึงใคร และถ้าผู้เล่าจะนำมาเล่าต่อจะต้องใช้สรรพนามตัวใดแทน ตัวอย่าง

Direct:            She said, “I found it here.”

Reported:       She said that she had found it here.

ในการเปลี่ยน Pointer words โดยทั่วๆไปมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงดังนี้

ในการเปลี่ยน Tense มีหลักดังนี้

1.      ถ้ากริยานำเป็น present ไม่ต้องเปลี่ยนแปลง tense ใน reported Speech

2.      ถ้ากริยานำเป็น past กริยาในประโยคตามต้องเปลี่ยนดังนี้
